Darren did an official Fanclub Chat on August 26 2006 for all fanclub members.

We are very proud to post the transcript here:

Tracey
Hey Darren

Tracey
How are you doing?

Darren Hayes
Well good morning, afternoon and early evening!

Tracey
Thanks for joining us today

Darren Hayes
Puhleisure

Jayne1 asks "Hi Darren, what were your best bits of your big night in tour? (I really loved your entrance but it was all fantastic)."

Darren Hayes
The best bits were realizing a dream. To be able to tour and put on shows without a hit single, or even a record company supporting me.. and then to sell out every show. That was amazing. The bestest bit by far was seeing all of you and understanding that my audience is so loyal and incredibly generous to me.

~BA~ asks "Thanks so much for being with us today, Darren. My question deals with the use of vibrato. Is it something that you just have and use at will or can it be learned - do you love it, hate it, control it, hide it, manipulate it, accentuate it, play with it? Any thoughts on the above or more? Much Love, BettyAnn."

Darren Hayes
Apparently, great question by the way, vibrato is something you can't control. For those who don't know.. we are referring here to the natural vibration or 'pulse' that the vocal folds have when you sing. Some people try to 'manufacture it' but it always sounds a bit karaoke.

Darren Hayes
You are born with it.. and it's like the fingerprint of the voice.

cadge2005 asks "hi darren, what can we expect from the next album sound wise? Is it anything like the first two albums or different altogether?"

Darren Hayes
Nothing like Spin. A natural cousin or relative to TTATS although I can tell you right now this one is massive in scope. It's really rather grand and sweeping. Lots of incredible imagery. Obviously it's personal.. very inspired and colorful. I have to say I turned to Robert the other day and said 'this is the best thing I've ever done' and he smiled back and said 'me too!'. It's like everything I've had bottled up over the past few years is all coming out in a furious mountain stream. Lots of influences from poets, famous writers, and Victorian England believe it or not!

SugarPlumFairy asks "Hi Darren, I watched my TCFC DVD as soon as it dropped through my letterbox this week! It was an emotional watch, with many highs and lows. I just wondered, what is your favourite "funniest moment" from the DVD and why? Lots of love, Kat x"

Darren Hayes
I love the expression on Leonie's face when I am exhausting her with the 'tip' conversation. Can I just say out loud and proud how thankful we all should be to my sister for pulling this off! You have no idea how hard she and my Mother and family and friends worked to physically make this a reality. So thanks Sis! x

*Donna* asks "Hi Darren, I was wondering which you find more nerve-wracking and scary--- performing in front of a huge audience singing live at something like a Party in the Park with a 100,000 strong crowd or something smaller like the listening parties/TCFC screening which is more intimate? Thanks for taking the time to chat xx"

Darren Hayes
You know.. now I would say festivals. The Russian experience for example, as much as I love my Russian fans, was hard because people weren't there to see just me! So the audience was hard to win over. In the past I used to love arenas, but now I find them daunting. I much prefer the theatre environment. I love meeting you guys and I can't wait to do a listening party for this next record. How could I find you lot terrifying? hehe.

SavagelyInsatiable asks "Hi Darren, I'm curious, has there ever been a song that made it to a final album, but that you had some reservations about releasing because of how personal the song was? "

Darren Hayes
That's also a great question. Hm.. well I would say that 'too beds' and certainly 'unlovable' were songs I second guessed. But I do think it's our job as artists to make sure we ARE being too personal in the art. Not in the public life, but in the music, definitely. This new album is probably the most personal I've ever been.. not in a sad way.. in a reflective way. And that's really important to me.

addicted2darren asks "Hi Darren, my question is, would you consider voicing a character in an animated film? Loved the BNI show in London. Love you, Sue xx"

Darren Hayes
Hey Sue.. I absolutely would love to do that. I just finished recording a kids song for Calvin's school.. and it was so fun!

elle5882 asks "Hi Darren, hope you're enjoying your stay in the states, my favourite cover version that I have heard you sing is Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing", what is your favourite song to cover and why? Thanks, elle5882 xx"

Darren Hayes
Aww.. thanks elle. Leonie just played that in the car the other day and I sort of died of .. well.. I cringed a bit. Covers are fun when you are doing them. But to listen back all I hear is the original in my head and how mine differs. I adore anything by Annie Lennox. I loved singing the mircale of love at the Tsunami benefit (henceforth to be known as the world's rudest audience!.. great cause though)

NinJa asks "Hi Darren. Hope you're having fun in the US, can't wait to hear your new stuff! I'm addicted to your music, have been for 9 years now and always will be My question for you is: At the TCFC screening in Sydney, what went through your mind the second before the documentary started? Take care and say hi to Wally from me! Hugs NinJa, Denmark"

Darren Hayes
Hiya Denmark.. well what went through my mind? Is this too much? Is this too personal? Is it any good? What went through it as we were watching it was.. Wow! It's better than I thought it was. I think Grant did such a great job!

cmjmaria asks "Hi Darren. Thank u so much for being here. This is my Q: Are all the songs in your new album songs that you have written recently and starting from zero, or are there also songs that, as it happened for Dublin Sky, you had started writing some time ago, but could not complete until the experience you were referring to came full circle and you could represent it through your Music? Is your new Music the reflection of a completely new start for you, or is it part of the same journey? Ti voglio bene. Maria (Venice)"

Darren Hayes
Hey Maria. Great great question. Well let me tell you what leonie said to me the other day.. she said that the music sounds so uninhibited. Which is really something that was possible because of The Tension and The Spark. She said, you sound 'free'. And then she said.. you know you are free personally, professionally and creatively for the first time since I've known you. And that is a part of the journey of my life, of course. There are all sorts of songs you mentioned. I'll tell you right now the plan is for this to be a double album. I had so much to say, and I didn't want to be constricted to just 12 songs. Who knows if that will be the case.. so don't kill me if in 6 months time I release a single album.. but at this stage, that is my plan. So the songs range from things begun after TTATS to things literally being written today.. They discuss the fragility of life.. our balance on the edge.. my own personal struggle and eventual emancipation.. and gratitude. And also have a fantastical and almost spirtual or ghost of the past like element to them. Think Kate Bush.

DarrensGuitar asks "HI Darren,I recieved your TCFC DVD during the week and totally love IT!!! Thankyou for sharing yourself with us again!! My question is do you still get to practise guitar?"

Darren Hayes
I do not! I'm so fickle. Other things inspire me. I recently bought a Fairlight Synthesiser - (peter gabriel, kate bush and Ivor Davies really embraced this first hard disk sampling instrument in the 80's) and it has become my new muse.

RubyD asks "Hi Darren! How do you usually spend your time on the concert days? Ryoko xxx"

Darren Hayes
He Ryoko.. I usually spend it just preparing physically. As you know I take my heatlh and fitness very seriously when I'm touring.. so I have a trainer who comes with me on tour. We get as much sleep as possible.. constantly drink water *up to 3 or litres a day* and work out at a gym from about 2pm. When I get back to the venue it's work.. meet and greets, soundcheck etc. It's only after all of that when I relax and do some yoga before the show. At about 8pm my 'beauty patrol' starts.. with Troy getting me made up, hair did and threads on. Vocal warm up at 8.45 and on we go!

R2D2 asks "Hi Darren! What`s your favourite Star Wars character and why? May the Force be with you! Lots of love, Paulina from Poland PS. I keep my fingers (and toes) crossed for you and your new album!"

Darren Hayes
I would say that C3PO is. I love the design of that character and his flaws. His insecurities make him endearing to me. Did you know that those movies are essentially the tales of the two robots? And how they witness the events. They (R2 and GoldenRod) are the only constant characters.

Irina asks "Hey Darren! If you could change one thing about the music industry what would it be and why? Best of luck with the new album! Irina xx (Moscow, Russia)"

Darren Hayes
Clear Channel!
Darren Hayes
I really think that music should be up to the people, not corporations.

MandyJC asks "Hi Darren! Congratulations on your recent marriage. Did you go anywhere fabulous for your honeymoon? What have you been doing today before this chat? Take care, Love Mandy xx"

Darren Hayes
Hey Mandy. Thanks for the congrats. We had a beautiful day, happiest day of my life and an incredible honeymoon yep. But it's funny because I'll always keep the details private. My relationship makes me a strong man so that I can make art and music. It isn't the thing I put forward for public consumption.. it's the back bone to me. So that's why I'm so guarded about it. If you look at the trail of dead marriages in Hollywood I think you'll agree that talking about them and carving them up for the world kills them. xx

adavis asks "Hi Darren, I am intrigued by your recent statements describing what your new album will be like. I saw TTATS as a diary of deconstruction towards reconstruction / healing of your psyche. Since you say this new album is a continuation of the TTATS, can it be described as greater self reflection, since that could be a logical continuum, or more like application of lessons learned? (...or neither). Thanks, and hugs, Anita D."

Darren Hayes
Hey Anita.. wow these questions are deep! Love it! O.k.. I would say in retrospect that TTATS was really psychoanalytical. And this new record is sub conscious. Does that make sense?

*Nic* asks "Hi Darren, Hope you're well! Describe your life at the moment in three words...Nic xxx"

Darren Hayes
Blessed. Creative. Peaceful.

Elle asks "Hi Darren, what music are you listening to the most at the moment?. I also wanted to wish you all the best with your new album xx"

Darren Hayes
The Hounds of Love by Kate Bush. And old music really. Savage by Eurythmics. Can't WAIT for the new Killers record and am intrigued by Justin Timberlake's new stuff. Want to hear more.

Mickie asks "Hi Darren, If you give give us any more words of wisdom that you hadn't already said in Affirmation, what would they be? Hope your well x"

Darren Hayes
Aww hey Mickie. I don't know if I'm wise. My words of wisdom recently are a mantra my sis and I have worked out. 'Listen to your gut'. It's never wrong.

INSATIABLEKAT asks "Hi Darren,Have you ever suffered from stage fright?"

Darren Hayes
Of course Kat. Every night. But that fear makes me explode. You'll always know if I'm terrified (like in Sweden recently) because I try SO HARD! hehe.

kayleigh asks "Hey Darren, enormous thanks for all that you already share with us....do you plan to share your new music with us at a pre-launch album listening party again - it was such a generous thing to do with TTATS, and was a privilege to be there...thanks for your time tonight BTW, Michaela x"

Darren Hayes
Hey Michaela. Thank YOU for waiting up! Of course I plan to. I love how connected this community is. I really feel so proud to be a part of this 'family' and as such, I will always respect my audience enough to make sure the first time they listen to my new stuff is hopefully by my invitation.

darrenhayesgal asks "Hey Darren, A Big Night In at The Sydney Opera House was absolutely amazing and there were so many stand out moments for me both in the concert hall and outside the concert hall. My question is: did you have any stand out moments over those two days? And, what were they? "

Darren Hayes
My god.. of course ! There was a moment on the first night where my career literally lay hanging by a thread. It was a moment when the computers died. I had a moment where I thought.. "I either curl up and fail.. or I turn this moment around'. That was the moment my career took off into the future. Afterwards, I said to Bruce..the lighting designer and buddah wise man hero Bruce Ramus... it was amazing to me that disaster is entertaining. And he said to me.. ' disaster on it's own is not..disaster overcome however is breathtaking.".. He said there were not many people in the world on stage right now who could have gotten through that so triumphantly as we did.. making the challenge on stage part of the performance and taking it to a new level.

raqqers asks "Did you get a gold confessions balloon at any of the Madonna concerts you went to? And what impressed you most about her stage show?"

Darren Hayes
Hey Raqqers. I did, but I gave mine to a lady and her daughter next to me who didn't manage to get one. What impressed me most? Her stamina, dedication and perfection. Her precision and respect for her body and the craft. What an icon! What a role model for women! I bow down to the one I truly serve!!

inadhaze asks "Hello Darren, our question question is that me and my mam believe in the saying that if you love life, life will love you back. Is there any saying or phrase that you believe in? Love Amanda and Christine xxx"

Darren Hayes
Hey Amanada and Christine, that's a beautiful saying. Well, I believe something similar. I believe if you dont' love yourself, no one else can love you. No prizes for guessing that for many years I did not love myself. It was only when I had love and compassiona and acceptance for who I was that my life turned around for the better. Don't subscribe to these hideous notions that magazines and televsion promote to you.. that you have to have ONE type of body and ONE shade of teeth (lunar post apocolyptic neon white).. one breats size or one hair style. Embrace who YOU are.

macoca asks "Hi Darren, I Just Want You To Love Me will be on your new album, I think? What role is the beautiful song going to play in the whole album? Thanks, Masako"

Darren Hayes
Yes it will be macoca. But I wouldn't say it's indicative of the 'sound' of the whole piece. I would say it is indicative of the calm AFTER the storm.

AmandaH asks "Hi Darren, this year i went to see Depeche Mode and Morrissey. As a teenager i grew up listening to their music, to see them in concert was an amazing feeling finally see them live after all those years and to think that music had helped me through my teenage angst. Is their any band or artist you have yet to see that would give you that buzz? Thanks love Amanda x"

Darren Hayes
Hey Spinner! I have gone out of my way to see all the artists who carried me through the tough times. But I still have the same connections. For example.. I would say that Fleetwood Mac and especially Stevie Nicks will always do that for me. The song Gypsy for example, I associate witih my Mum and Sister. And San Francisco (the velvet underground as Stevie calls it..).. I wish I could have seen, say, Marilyn Monroe or seen Kate Bush in concert.. as these women are elusive to me and inspring..

spaceferret asks "Hi Darren! We love and miss you here in the USA! My question: Is there a song that picks you up and gives you strength and hope? "

Darren Hayes
God yeah! Let me think.. 'dont give up' by Peter Gabriel. That's a good one. Or I love listening to the FutureHeads version of 'hounds of love'.. that is a killer 'pick me up'. Love the nick by the way.

Julia1972 asks "Hi to you Darren. The singer Sandi Thom broadcast her music via webcam directly from her flat. How do you envisage the Internet in relation to your future career; do you still see it as a viable tool and would you utilise it in your own unique way? "

Darren Hayes
The net rocks full stop. I love youtube and all the new Vlogs. I don't know.. I definitely think in terms of discussion groups and even this chat for example.. my blog.. are essetial these days in keeping our connection to each other. I want my audience to grow with me.. and the only way to do that is by letting you in.

DarlingHarbour asks "Hi Darren, the Sydney shows were amazing - you were brilliant! Just wondering if you ever feel a bit of the post-concert sadness that we seem to? And could you please pass on a big hug to Lana from Benny. Luv Mel & Benny xxx"

Darren Hayes
I feel it more than you do!! It's a very real depression I feel when a tour ends. But.. I turn to the future and like now for example make new music so I can get back out there. I'm going to be touring more than I ever have before next year.. so watch out! Give benny a hug from me!

DirtyDevil asks "Hi Darren, If time travel were possible would you prefer to go forward in time or back? Love Linda x"

Darren Hayes
Linda, listen to my new record. That's all I'm going to say. (pssst.. back by the way.. not musically but emotionally..)

Jenfa23 asks "Hi Darren, hope ur well. My question is; If you could only keep one album on your ipod for life, what would it be?? Jenny xx"

Darren Hayes
Hounds of love by Kate Bush

todariamu asks "Hey Darren, thank you for your shows in Sydney, they were awesome. If you had the chance to be any character from any film or novel, who would it be and why? Thanks, Tammy"

Darren Hayes
Meaning a character in a film? Like me playing that character on screen? Hm.. probably a Jedi of some sort! Lol.

nuser asks "Hi Darren. When you and Daniel were making music, you told us that you two were eating peanut butter and banana sandwiches. What do you and Robert eat while making music? Hugs Charlotte M. Denmark "

Darren Hayes
Hey Charlotte. I used to eat peanut butter and banannas on rice cakes. Now, I eat almonds and lots of coffee! x

darrensfantasygirl asks "Hey, Darren. I love you more than you'll ever know. My question is, you said once that you want to live in San Fran three months a year. I was wondering-are there any other places you'd like to live? Thanks. "

Darren Hayes
No ! My dream is to have a second home in SF. This is something I really want to do.. and in fact this trip I'll be looking. I can't afford to buy one yet! (do yo know how expensive London is? Lol!!)... but yeah, I would live there probably over the English summer so I never have to be in the heat!

bizz asks "what was your inspiration when you wrote" the void" especially the line which says " they don't know you like i do..........." your dvd's excellent, tcfc tour is by far the best and we've been to them all. and we love u!! Mandy and bizz"

Darren Hayes
Wow.. well a lot of the sad songs on that record were about a very abusive relationship. Void and Unlovable are the same person I'm singing about. I was with someone who was wrong for me.. everyone else saw it but I wouldn't admit it. But you know what? It was a blessing becasue the relationship became a catalyst for lots of internal exploration and now I'm SO grateful for that pain. I was sort of given a cold bucket of water emotionally so to speak... and sorted my past out.

catriona asks "Hey Darren I've just got in from seeing Oliver Stone's "World Trade Centre" film...quite devastating...and now I'm wondering why so few artists even attempt to address issues of this magnitude. What do you think? Is there anything too big --or too small, for that matter-- to take on in the name of art? "

Darren Hayes
I don't think so at all Cat. It's interesting how you need time and space away from trauma to reflect. I've heard Sarah McLachlan say that the death of her mother was so personal that when she released her last record, she didn't really sing about it because her brain hadn't processed the experience properly yet. Kate said the same thing on 'the red shoes'.. it was only 12 years later that she addressed her mother's passing on 'ariel'.. on the gorgeous song 'a coral room'. I feel in some ways the WTC disaster is like that. It affected us all so profoundly. I was supposed to be on flight 93 can you believe it? I think that fragility of life.. the fact that our time here is not guaranteed has definitely colored my writing on my new album.

DarrensTash asks "Hi Darren, what musical influences have you drawn on with the new album, has anyone/anything heavily influenced you or is it going to be a unique sound as we had with TTATS, does lightening strike twice lol? Love Carole xx"

Darren Hayes
Lighting strikes twice, and harder.. but from the opposite direction for me! Influences are really not easy to define. They would be the Fairlight, Eccentricity, Conceptuality and Technicolor. How's that for cryptic? Hehe.

StrangeTheresa asks "When my husband used to play football he had these lucky red jocks that he couldn't go on the field without - they ended up trashed from overuse but he still thought they were the bomb! Do you have any lucky charms or weird rituals that you can't go on stage without?"

Darren Hayes
My red rosary beads that my sister gave me. I'm not a christian but I believe that Jesus existed and I love the symbolism of his ideals.

fallenangel asks " Hello Darren. Thank you for believing in us enough to bring Big Night In to Australia, there was a special magic in those two days for all of us. My question: If you had the opportunity to do just one thing in the last 10 years differently what would it be?"

Darren Hayes
I don't have regrets. Really don't. I believe if you want to change something, just change. Moving forward and learning from mistakes is what is important.

JoyceakaBromley asks "Hi Darren. Appearing at the Sydney Opera House must have been one of THE highlights of your career. Are there any other auditoriums or venues in the world where you would still love to appear. For instance, I would love to see you at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Joyce xx"

Darren Hayes
Snap! Was just about to type that when I read the end of your question. Royal Albert Hall definitley.

Darren Hayes
Sorry for my bad spelling by the way. I've been typing furiously to make sure we get as many questions answered as possible!

dirtycrush asks "Hey Darren, my question for you tonight is Do you still remember all the sign language to Crash and Burn because I'd love to see you perform it again on stage Lots of love and kisses xx"

Darren Hayes
I absolutely do not. Sad huh? Perhaps one day. I would love to have more performance on stage, like expressive movement or physical challenges. Per'aps next tour? Although I can warn you all now, the 'hits' on on hiatus for a while! x

hails asks "hi Darren, thanks so much for tonight, my Q is what is your favourite song to sing live and why, love hayley muir xx"

Darren Hayes
Easily on the last tour it was Chained To You. LOVED IT!!! and Unlovable and of course.. the electro version of Break Me!!

TrulyScrumptious asks "When writing new material, do you ever re-cycle lyrics/melodies from previously discarded songs or do youalways write from scratch?"

Darren Hayes
Always from scratch. Wihout a doubt. Melodies and lyrics have to be reactionary to the moment for me.

floatingdarren asks "Hi Darren, What would you be doing if you hadn`t been a singer? Would you still be teaching or would you be doing something else? Love Gemma"

Darren Hayes
I would never have been a teacher. It was something the universe decided for me. I tried! I would always have done this, I'm sure.

savageoneca asks "Hey Darren, Where do you see yourself ten years from now?"

Darren Hayes
Still making music. Going strong. Being acclaimed for sticking to my guns.

ChrisT asks "Hi Darren. I've read that Madonna exercises for four hours a day(she certainly looks good on it too) so I was wondering how much time you devote to exercise. Apart from the obvious reason of keeping you fit, does it help the creative processes at all? Whatever your exercise regime, it's obviously working...I was very impressed with your one handed push ups in Stockholm..show off..hehe..Love 'n stuff xxChris"

Darren Hayes
Aww thanks Chris. I have a love/hate relationship with the gym. I'm naturally someone who puts weight on.. and secretly I like a bit of pudge. On me, and others. But on stage, it really hinders me so I try to get into shape when I'm touring. For that tour, I was doing 2 hours a day five days a week. But there is a point you can get to where it's not natural to keep your weight down for long periods.. so I'm definitley finding that healthy balance. The permanent changes I made in my life were cutting all chemicals like nutra sweet and artificial additives out of my diet. That changed my whole dynamic.

vonnie asks "what was it like for you watching the DVD along with family friends and fans at the premiers? luv ya Vonnie xxx "

Darren Hayes
Excruciating.

Darren Hayes
but entertaining.

Darren Hayes
Bizzarre.

Darren Hayes
but fun.

Darren Hayes
Love ya too!

Bilby asks "Hey Darren. During the second BNI concert at the Sydney Opera House, our hearts nearly stopped when you stacked it. What was going through your mind at that very moment? Lots of Love, Sylvia & Kerry xx "

Darren Hayes
What was going through my mind? The word that ryhmes with Truck!! But you know what, Madonna just tripped on a balloon this week, albeit a gold one. So %hit happens. hehe.

InsatiableforDarren asks "Hi Darren, hope you're well. Congrats again to you and Richard and thanks for another fab tour! I was wondering what you like best about England and London? Take care, Jenny x"

Darren Hayes
I love the weather, I love the political forwardness. I love the architecture, I love the people, the intellect, the sense of humour, the eccentricities. The houses, the leaves, the fashion the music. I love it.

ClareGreen asks "Hi Darren, We all know that you love the Star Wars films but what other films are you in to? (I thought I would give you a short break from the deep questions so you can catch your breath!). Thanks for your time Love Clare xxx"

Darren Hayes
Gosh, I love anything by PT Anderson and Wes Anderson. No relation. for the record these films include punch drunk love, magnolia, rushmore, the royal tenenbaums..

Laurie asks "Hi Darren. Thank you for taking the time to chat with all of us today. I recently read that Phoenix's 4 seasons are: tolerable, hot, really hot, and are you freakin' kidding me?! So my question to you is... what season are you experiencing right now?"

Darren Hayes
Unbearable what was I thinking Hot. Thank god the music rocks!

Darren Hayes
Listen folks. I love you way too much. It's beyond healthy. But I gotsta go!! Love you love you love you!!!!!! See you soon hopefully x x x x x x x

Tracey
